Influence of Project Management on Organization

Influence of Project Management on Organizations
Organizational Liaison Devices that emerged or were developed were, both
formal and informal.
Jay R Galbraith studied these liaison devices. They are as follows…
1) Individual liaison 5) Task forces
2) Standing committees 6) Project engineer
3) Product managers 7) Liaison Position
4) Managerial liaison

 Individual Liaison
It is the simplest and best form of liaison brought about by people who
sense the need to work together and go about maintaining contact with
others in the organization who have a vested interest in an activity under
way.
This liaison is usually self motivated.

 Standing Committees
They are used extensively to integrate organizational activities.
At the top level such committees are called Plural executives.
They bring about the synergy in the making and exection of key operational
and strategic decisions for the organizations.

 Product Managers
Product managers are appointed to act as a focal point for the marketing
and sales promotion of a product.
They are provided with a small administrative staff and might have
profit/loss responsibility.

 Managerial Liaison
This form is widely used in modern organizations.
When more formal linkage is needed, a manager or supervisor is apponted
who is in charge of several people throughout setting direction for the
organizational unit andproviding supervisory durisdiction over the people.

 Task forces
Task forces often ae used tobring a focus to short term organizational
activities.
Members appointed to the task forces to work on an Adhoc problem or
opportunity.

 Project engineer
He is responsible for directing and integrating the technical aspects of the
design/development process.
The project engineer manages a project throughout all its engineering
steps, from initial design to manufacture or construction.

 Liaison position
When a significant amont of contact is required to coordinate the activities
of two or more organizational entities, a liaison position is formlally
established to bring about synergy and communication between the units.
This position as no direct formal authority over the organizational units but is
expected to communicate, coordinate, pull together and informally integrae
work among the organizational units.
Examples _ an engineering liaisonperson, a production coordinator or aidede-
camp in a military organization.

 Teams
In modern organizations, alternative project teams are used to complement
an existing organizational design.
Examples _ project teams, project engineering teams, and task forces and
also includes production teams, quality circles, product design teams and
crisis management teams.
